The First Steps: Getting Support
|
I wanted to create an outreach group for my Church and Dr. Kent Nelson said we needed to have supporters or "followers." So, before creating it, I put my ideas together and shared it with a few close friends and family members. Their feedback was positive and they liked my idea, so I began creating Project Outreach. I knew I wanted support from a range of people, so I met with youth leaders from Cedar Ridge Church who contributed their thoughts and ideas for Project Outreach. Knowing Lanah was a skilled communicator, I met with her to work on a presentation I would later present to about 75 people at Cedar Ridge Church.
Next I , creating a website, and meeting throughout the year with Pastor Joel and others regarding future events and ideas.
In 2015, I led one meeting where about 12 people from the Church attended in order to share their thoughts and ideas moving forward. I participated in multiple meetings about Project Outreach with the Mission Team, and had many one-on-one meetings with my pastor about developing Project Outreach. We have participated in multiple events and hosted events.
Each event has required the skills and service of multiple people and through it all I have had support from a specific few team members. These experiences have taught me that it is important to always have a group of supporters who you can rely on to help out with events, brainstorm ideas, and discuss the focus, vision, and mission with. My leadership has been displayed through my initiative, willingness to listen, and continuation with developing Project Outreach with others.

The Social Media Aspect
Project Outreach needed a space in social media, so I began using Weebly as the website facilitator to host a web page for Project Outreach. In order to obtain the domain, we would need funding for the website. Knowing how to use Weebly, I moved forward with requesting support from the elders of the Church, rather than simply paying the annual fee myself. I knew that people put their money behind something they believed in, so I sought the support of the Church for Project Outreach, knowing that their financial support would mean their support for Project Outreach and its future at CRC.
I provided the leaders with answers to their questions regarding the cost and purpose for using a website facilitator like the one I suggested. Explaining why this website facilitator was best us at the time, I was thankful to find out they were happy to support the website for Project Outreach. Now the website is used as a place not only for Project Outreach (AKA Local Outreach), but also for the regional and international affiliations and ministries. I could have easily tried to succeed on my own, but demonstrated leadership by choosing to seek out support, ask questions, and share a vision. |
